In 2016, 154 wind turbines, each 145 meters high, will shape the Shetland Islands landscape. Since the British Government proposed to reduce the country’s carbon emissions to half by 2020, many private companies have taken advantage, developing huge scale renewable energy projects. Viking Energy Ltd, a partnership between Scottish and Southern Energy and the Shetland Island Council, is in charge of the Shetland wind farm project. But the majority of Shetlanders are strictly against a wind farm that they consider dangerous for the Shetland ecosystem. Billy Fox, chairman of Sustainable Shetland (sustainableshetland.org), worries about the future of these islands with such a huge project on their horizon.

En 2016, 154 éoliennes de 145 mètres de haut chacune seront partie intégrante du paysage des îles Shetland, au large de l’Ecosse. Alors que le Gouvernement britannique souhaite réduire de moitié les émissions de gaz à effet de serre de la Grande-Bretagne d’ici 2020, de nombreuses entreprises privées profitent des subventions allouées par l’Etat pour développer de gigantesques projets destinés à produire de l’énergie verte. Viking Energy Ltd., un partenariat entre Scottish et Southern Energy et le Conseil municipal des îles Shetland, se charge du bon développement du parc éolien. Néanmoins, la majorité des habitants de ces îles s’oppose fermement à ce projet qu’ils jugent dangereux pour l’écosystème local. Billy Fox, président de l’association Sustainable Shetland, déplore le manque de bon sens des politiciens locaux et s’inquiète pour le futur de ces îles.
